Crystal Lake doesn't hibernate in winter. From the Tree Lighting Ceremony that kicks off the holiday season to the Snow Much Fun Festival in January, the community stays active through the colder months. Here's your guide to fall and winter events.

Fall Events

Main Street Trick-or-Treating (Saturday before Halloween) Downtown businesses hand out candy to kids along Main Street in a safe, walkable trick-or-treat event. Kids in costumes fill the sidewalks — it's one of the most charming community events of the year.

Trunk or Treat (Late October) Crystal Lake Park District hosts a family-friendly Halloween event with decorated car trunks, candy, games, and costume contests in a controlled parking lot setting.

Cary-Grove Homecoming Parade (October) The Cary-Grove High School homecoming parade runs from downtown Cary to the school — floats, marching band, and serious community pride.

A note for horror fans: Yes, Crystal Lake shares its name with the lake from the Friday the 13th movies — but this is not Camp Crystal Lake, and Jason Voorhees isn't on our park district roster. Locals just like to have fun with the coincidence every October.

Holiday Season

Tree Lighting Ceremony (Friday after Thanksgiving) Downtown Crystal Lake's holiday kickoff — the official tree lighting with Santa, hot cocoa, caroling, and late-night downtown shopping. This marks the start of the holiday season and downtown businesses offer special deals.

Holiday in the Park — Cary (First Saturday in December) Lions Park tree lighting, visit with Santa, horse-drawn carriage rides, and holiday crafts. A smaller, intimate community event.

Downtown Holiday Shopping Crystal Lake's Main Street shops offer extended holiday hours and unique local gifts you won't find at the mall. Support local businesses and avoid the Rt 14 traffic.

Winter Activities

Snow Much Fun Festival (January/February) Crystal Lake's winter community event with outdoor activities, ice sculptures, warm treats, and winter sports demonstrations. Proves that Crystal Lake can throw a party even in subzero temperatures.

Indoor options during cold snaps:

  • Raue Center for the Arts — live theater and music year-round
  • Crystal Lake Public Library — events, author readings, and programs
  • Anytime Fitness — 24-hour gym for cabin fever
  • Crystal Lake Park District indoor programs — basketball, swimming, fitness classes

Surviving Winter in Crystal Lake

  • Snow removal: The city handles main roads; you're responsible for your sidewalk and driveway
  • Indoor activities: Park District, library, and Raue Center keep programming running all winter
  • Cross-country skiing: Three Oaks Recreation Area has trails when snow conditions allow
  • Stock up: The area averages 35+ inches of snow per season. Keep your pantry ready for storm days.
